Based on my research (thanks, internet), I’ve learned that this particular red string tattoo is called the “red string of fate” in parts of Asia. This tattoo, which is most often seen on women’s pinky fingers and men’s thumbs, resembles a knotted shoelace in its simplicity.
It turns out that this little tattoo has deeper symbolic significance, one that stems from feelings of optimism and romanticism. It is said that the narrative originates from a Chinese folktale about a matchmaker who supposedly knows our soulmates.
Like the notion of being inseparable from another person by some unseen tie, the idea of being doomed to meet another person isn’t limited to romantic pursuits; in fact, it’s prevalent in almost every culture.
Here, the red thread of destiny suggests that two individuals are bound to be lovers no matter what happens. That could be a reassuring and cozy idea for some people. Still others, I’m sure, would rather have complete control over their own fate.
